When nearly all people think about belly fat losing exercises, the first thing that comes to mind is a gym or lots of expensive exercise equipment. But think about this: in our caveman days, we sure didn’t have gyms or equipment liike that – and we weren’t fat, either.

So how exactly did our ancestors manage to stay in such great physical shape?

Well, for one thing, they didn’t have high fat and high calorie diets, but neither did they require exercise equipment and routines in order to stay in really good shape like this. The reason is that they used their own bodies as their exercise tools.

Looking for a reverse osmosis water purification unit? I would suggest that you consider all of your options, before you buy one, AND if you are serviced by a public treatment facility, you should know that you DO NOT need one.

If you have a private well, numerous contaminants or impurities may be causing you problems. If you haven’t had testing done, you should take that step first. Once you know what contaminants are present, you can learn about how they can be removed. With the technology that is available today, it is unlikely that a reverse osmosis water purification unit is your only option.

Those of us who are on a public waterline don’t need to have testing completed. Our treatment facilities keep us informed about some of the contaminants that are present. Chlorine, THMs, VOCs and lead are examples. We have also been informed by the Environmental Protection Agency that cysts (illness causing parasites in an early stage of development) might be present at any time, because regular testing is considered “unfeasible”. 

The EPA has warned that the illness caused by cyst consumption can be very serious, even fatal, to those who have weakened immune systems, either due to a long-term illness or the treatment of one, such as chemo-therapy or immuno-suppressive drugs.

The larger, more expensive, whole house designs create gallons of wastewater that are dumped down your drain, taxing a septic system or increasing what your home puts into the sewer. Instead of a reverse osmosis water purification unit, here is what I would recommend for those of you who have a publicly treated supply:

Submicron filtration, which removes cysts and other particulates, granular carbon, which reduces chlorine and other chemicals, a multi-media block, which further reduces chlorine and traps THMs and VOCs that are normally difficult to remove, and ion exchange, which will remove more than 99% of all traces of lead in your supply.

It is important to note that most of the so-called “purifiers” that you see in department stores do nothing but reduce chlorine. You don’t need an expensive reverse osmosis water purification unit, but you do need more than a simple chlorine-filter. Look for performance, first.

Gravity Inversion Therapy: My Experience

Gravity Inversion Therapy is designed to reverse the pressure your body has on it most of the day.  Of course, anything I write here should be verified by a doctor as being safe for you.  For myself, this has done wonders.

Years of weight lifting left me with back problems, not to mention all kinds of joint problems. I spoke with doctors, got MRI’s and all the stuff you’re supposed to do to diagnose and treat back pain.

I was hesitant on surgery, as most of my family has had back surgeries and always cautioned me to not have it if I could avoid it.  Pain medications also were not in my plan, as I don’t like having to rely on taking pills every day.

I did see a chiropractor a few times but got no relief and was frankly a little worried about all the twisting he did with my back.  This may be great for some people, but not for me.
Along the way, I noticed that the pain decreased when I got pressure off of my body.

Laying in bed, for instance, would help a bit as would stretching.  One Saturday morning I came downstairs to a commercial for inversion tables.  It all clicked for me right there and then.

At the time, I didn’t have the money for an inversion table so I tried on my own to duplicate the effects.  I used my dip, or parallel bars to hold myself up with the palms of my hand.

The relief was immediate, but holding that position for more than a few minutes is tough.  
Once I realized that I needed a device of my own, I started saving.  Eventually, I did get a table and it did me a lot of good.  Mainly, it allows me to use Gravity Inversion Therapy to take all the pressure off my joints and spinal column.

There’s all kinds of science to back this up, including theories that taking pressure off of the spinal column allows the delicate discs to re-hydrate.  I can’t speak to specific scientific justifications for why, but I do know that Gravity Inversion Therapy is helpful to me.

Natural Muscle Soreness Recovery

Do you LOVE exercising and all its health benefits, but hate the soreness that it brings?

I know I do!  I *really* love challenging my muscles by frequently incorporating new moves into my routines.  Not
only does this keep exercising fun and interesting, but it also ensures that I am incorporating good variety and hitting every muscle group.

Unfortunately, upping the intensity of my workout often means serious DOMS the next day.  DOMS, or Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness, simply refers to the soreness you experience 24-72 hours after an intense workout.

This pain is thought to be caused by little tears created in our muscle fibers when we create enough
resistance to challenge the muscles being used.

That’s why it is so important to allow the body to fully recover between each workout.  You need to rest so that your
musculature can heal.

But that’s another email for another day…

Today’s email is all about DOMS and what you can do to help alleviate the symptoms.

Ditch the DOMS

Here’s a quick and super useful tip that I frequently use to alleviate DOMS.  It won’t cost you any extra *time* or *money.*

You actually do it in the shower right after your workout!

Here’s what you do:

When you get into the shower, start with hot water.
After 30 seconds, turn the temp down to as cold as you can stand.
30 seconds later, turn it back up to hot.
Repeat until you are finished with your shower.

We’ve all heard of taking long hot baths to relieve soreness and tension, right?  While that works okay, I find that the
cold-hot method above works much better.

That’s because alternating between extreme temperatures helps to stimulate blood flow, which reduces swelling.

This technique, also known as Contrast Water Treatment (CWT), has actually been shown to reduce and improve
recovery deficiencies caused by DOMS.  In other words, you are able to recover more quickly!

So if you want to experience the benefits of strength training without all the soreness, you have to give this tip
a try.  I always try to finish my workout with one of these quick hot-cold showers because when I do, any soreness is
*dramatically* reduced.

And it’s totally simple, totally quick, and totally free!

Now go build some sleek, sexy muscle!

How I Became a Morning Person

I don’t know about you, but I love my mornings.  I generally wake up between 6-7am, even though I don’t have class until later in the day, and yet I never feel the need to turn over and go back to sleep.

I wake up completely refreshed and ready to start the day.

But I wasn’t always this way.

I used to absolutely despise mornings.  I was anemic for many years and would dread waking up.  I knew no matter how early I went to bed, I would always wake up feeling groggy and ticked off.

So just how exactly did I become a morning person?

I Adopted a Low Fat Raw Vegan Diet

The very first step that improved my mornings was switching to a healthy raw food diet.  While I didn’t go raw to solve my aversion to the AM, this just so happened to be one of the effects.

You see, when you no longer consume toxic cooked foods, your body is no longer over burdened and does not have to work so hard to process what you eat.

When you eat a cooked food diet, particularly a high-fat SAD version, your body is almost constantly digesting food.  Depending upon the types of foods you are eating, it can take hours and hours for your body to completely digest (digestion, absorption, assimilation, and elimination) just one meal.

So even if you eat an early dinner around 6pm, you will still be digesting your food well into the night.  Now your body has to continue working instead of resting, which means a less restful and deep sleep for you.

And we know how painful those Monday mornings are when we haven’t had a good night’s sleep!

When you eat a healthy low fat raw food diet, on the other hand, digestion takes much less time and effort.  Literally minutes after a large fruit meal, your body will already have run through the first few stages of digestion with relative ease.

And the final stage…you know the one…is not too far *behind*!

Haha, pun intended. :D

So if you eat dinner around 6pm, your body will have plenty of time to completely digest your food before bedtime.  This means a much more effective sleepy session and a much more peaceful, refreshed morning.

I Killed My Alarm Clock

The second step I took that made me impervious to morning grogginess was to get rid of my alarm clock.

Think about it: how in the world can you expect to wake up to loud, incessant beeping and feel comfortable, refreshed, and ready to start your day?

It just isn’t possible!

When you use artificial means to wake up, whether it’s the beep of an alarm clock or the not-so-gentle nudge from a spouse, you risk awaking during an REM cycle.

These cycles occur every 90-120 minutes and this is when you are at your deepest point of sleep.  Awaking during this time usually leaves you feeling super sleepy because you have not completed the cycle and, therefore, you have not gotten enough sleep.

Getting rid of your alarm clock means that you can allow your body to wake up naturally.  You will awaken when your body is ready, feeling completely energized and ready to go.

I Ate Dinner Earlier

The final step I took that helped me become a morning person was to start consuming my dinner meals earlier in the evening.  While it’s much less-noticeable change than the first two, adopting this technique does make a difference.

Even on a raw food diet, our digestion slows down in the evening in preparation for rest.  If we eat too late in the day, our bodies may still be working by the time we go to sleep.

The general rule is to eat your last meal 2-3 hours before you go to sleep.  So instead of eating dinner at 8pm or so, I began eating between 5-7pm.  This way, I could make sure that my meals were fully digested before my head hit the pillow.

The easiest way to accomplish this is to start eating early in the day.  If you eat three meals a day and have breakfast at 9am, you could wait four hours between meals and have lunch at 1pm and then dinner 5pm.

*Easy, but I do have a little caveat:*

If you are brand new to raw foods, I do not recommend worrying about eating late just yet.  It is more important to make sure you are getting enough calories and become comfortable with this way of eating first and foremost.

Even if you continue to eat late, you will still see a remarkable change in the way you sleep and how you feel when you awake if you adopt a low fat raw vegan diet and say bye-bye to your alarm clock.

When I first went raw and had trouble with undereating, I often woke up in the middle of the night and ate grapes or other fruit.  Even with this late night snacking, I still woke up early and felt a BILLION times better than when I was a poor little anemic cooked food alarm-loving vegan.
