What is the cause of sciatica? In order to free yourself of this debilitating problem, you first need to know how it has come about. The trigger of sciatic nerve discomfort in pregnancy is most frequently due to a compression of the nerve, also known as a pinched nerve. Although in sciatica it will feel a lot worse than just a pinched nerve.

Where does this compression occur? Most often the compression a nerve takes place right after it exits your spinal column. The sciatic nerve exits the sacrum, the large triangular bone at the base of the spine. This is the most common place for sciatic nerve compression. The compression (pinching) is done by the structures surrounding the nerve.

In the case of the sciatic nerve, the buttock muscle called the piriformis muscle is implicated. In pregnancy, a lot of the added weight is carried by the muscles on your back, your hips and your buttocks. Tension in the piriformis muscle causes it to compress or pinch the sciatic nerve.

The compression of the nerve causes a sharp, nerve like pain to shoot down the back of your leg and down to your foot. The straight leg test is a fairly good way of diagnosing sciatic pain. If you are unable to lift your leg (keep your leg straight)whilst lying down by more than 45 degrees, then it is highly likely that you are suffering from sciatica.Sciatic nerve pain and back pain normally occur together. This is because tense buttock muscles will lead to tense back muscles and vice versa.

So, how do you relieve this dreadful pain? The only way to effectively relieve the pain is to release the muscles surrounding the nerve of any tension. You can do this to a certain extent by trying to stretch these muscles, but this is difficult enough to do for a normal person let only for a pregnant mother with sciatic pain!
